What are General Dental Fillings?
Dental fillings are direct restorations, such as composite, to restore one’s teeth. These fillings are designed to repair cracked, broken, and worn-down teeth. Old, cracked and unsightly amalgam fillings can be replaced with naturally coloured tooth fillings. The most common reason why one would require a dental filling is as a result of dental decay (dental caries).

Dental caries, also known as tooth decay, is a widespread and common oral health problem that affects people worldwide.
Dental caries is a chronic, non-communicable disease that has been prevalent for centuries, and its occurrence is not limited to a specific geographic location or population group. It is caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria, a diet high in sugar and carbohydrates, poor oral hygiene, and other factors that can vary from person to person.
Dental caries can lead to pain, infection, and tooth loss, which can affect a person’s overall health and quality of life. Prevention and early detection through regular dental check-ups, oral hygiene practices, and healthy dietary habits are key to reducing the prevalence of dental caries.
To begin the treatment your dentist will numb the area where treatment will take place using a local anesthetic. The decayed area is softer than the rest of the enamel and dentine; this will be removed by rotary instruments and air abrasion. Caries indicator is used after cleaning the area to ensure all the decay is removed.
The area will be treated with a surface treatment to aid bonding the dental composite to the tooth. Materials are most commonly light activated. Cavities between teeth are separated by a matrix system creating a wall between teeth and ensuring not to join the teeth together when placing the composite filling.
The filling will be shaped, trimmed and polished to accomplish desired results. The bite (occlusion) is checked to ensure optimum comfort and function.
Dental fillings last longer when you practice good oral hygiene, these practices include visiting your dentist regularly for cleaning, brushing with fluoride-containing toothpaste, and flossing once daily.
Teeth Gap Fillings
Also referred to as diastema – teeth gaps are a common cosmetic dental problem most people struggle with. Whether they are genetic or have developed over time, they can be corrected with dental bonding (or dental fillings), veneers, implants, and more.
Other causes of tooth gaps include a poorly aligned dental arch and an oversized labial frenum, which are the tissues above the two front teeth. Thumb-sucking in the early stages of childhood is also a cause of gaps.
There are a number of ways to fill in tooth gaps that Enamel Clinic can help with, these include the following:
- Porcelain Veneers
- Dental Bonding
- Invisalign
- Dental Implants
