Mark has pioneered the development of Digital Smile Design in South Africa; this concept allows dentists to develop a smile which fits the individual patients Aesthetic and Functional needs whilst providing Minimally Invasive Dentistry.

“Digital Smile Design (DSD) is the starting point of all dental rehabilitation, for both simple and complex cases. For many dentists treatment planning resulted in compromises of both Aesthetics and Function, with DSD we now have a truly facially Driven Planning process which can guarantee perfect results. Digital Smile Design (DSD) allows us to make Multidisciplinary decisions that most cases need and is the perfect tool for communication to the entire Dental Team.  Minimally Invasive Dentistry is my passion and without doubt DSD is the driving force to ensure tooth preservation in all cases.

The most powerful use of Digital Smile Design (DSD) is the emotional benefits we see when we allow our patients to be involved in the treatment process. We live in a world where communication is key, DSD is the perfect language!”

Mark is a DSD World Master and an Instructor, the only Instructor in South Africa, and one of only two on the African Continent. He lectures and teaches DSD both in South Africa and Internationally.

Mark has also introduced “Intelligent Aligner Systems”, IAS, to South Africa.  Mark is passionate about minimally invasive treatment, and uses several forms of short term adult orthodontics in his aesthetic cases, such as the spring aligner- Inman Aligner, clear removable aligners and fixed braces.  He is presently the only certified instructor for IAS in Africa and as such runs many courses to teach fellow dentists.

In 2018 he founded the Digital Dentistry Society of South Africa for which he is President . He is also the Scientific chairman for SADA (South African Dental Association) 2019/20.

Mark has recently been invited to be a silver member of the prestigious group Styleitaliano, and an honorary global ambassador for @slowdentistry, as well as a Global ambassador for the Humble Smile Foundation.

Dr Andre Brand

Born and raised in Pretoria, Dr Andre Brand qualified with a BChD at the University of Pretoria in 1996. Andre’s career started in Pretoria in a general dental practice. This posting was followed by working with a Specialist Prosthodontist in Bryanston, Johannesburg. Here he was exposed to constant mentoring and learning. During this time, he completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Oral Surgery at the University of Pretoria. In addition, he worked part-time in a teaching capacity in the same department.

After 3 years, Andre and his wife moved to the UK. He initially worked as the Senior Dentist for the Milton Keynes branch of Boots Dental Care. He later had his private practice in Windsor. His fields of interest developed into Dental Implantology, covering all aspects of this, Computerized Dentistry with an emphasis on Smile make-overs and Endodontics. While in the UK, Andre also completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Dental Implantology with the University of the Western Cape.

Returning to South Africa after 9 years abroad, Andre and his family settled in Somerset West, Western Cape. Here he became involved at a private practice, focusing on Implant Treatments, Cosmetic and Digital Dentistry, and Endodontics. Following the purchase of a Dental Microscope, Andre became passionate about using this in all aspects of Dentistry and especially in the field of Endodontics. Realizing the need for Microscope-enhanced Endodontic treatments, he started to focus on this, subsequently completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Endodontics at the University of Pretoria.

Andre joined Enamel Clinic (formerly Enamel Dentistry) in 2016 with his practice limited to Endodontics, offering all aspects of Endodontic treatments on a referral basis. He is also a founding member of the Cape-Endo Endodontic Study Club and lectures for them. Andre is registered with the HPCSA and a member of the South African Dental Association.

Dr Sheryl Smithies

Dr Sheryl Smithies is relocating to Cape Town from Durban where she has been in private practice in Musgrave since she completed her community service in Dentistry in 2005. She practiced under Dr PJM Smith who mentored her in many aspects of dentistry. With his guidance she became a good all-rounder in dentistry with treatments ranging from basic restorations, root treatments, crown and bridge as well as prosthetic dentistry.

During her time with Dr Smith, Sheryl attended many courses in basic dentistry nationally. She also started out with restoration of dental implants and attended many congresses on this topic. In 2008 she completed the Allergan basic Dermal Fillers and Botox(r) course. It was this course that opened her eyes not only to what facial aesthetics were possible but how the face and the teeth work together when treating dental and facial aesthetics.

Sheryl opened The Smile Emporium, her own private practice in Musgrave in 2011. By being in her own practice she was then able to expand on her skills and really hone the types of treatment with a more aesthetic drive. She has completed many full rehabilitations both on natural teeth as well as with implants. She has been a member of the International Team of Implantology and has attended many international implant courses including the latest in minimally invasive implant techniques with the Versah protocol. She did an internship at Cochin Implant Institute where she learned the very necessary skills of surgically placing implants. In her view, implantology is a treatment that can be done simultaneously as part of a smile design treatment rather than just a treatment for a missing tooth.

Also during the years she has completed many advanced facial aesthetic seminars. She has completed the Allergan internship in 2017 and has been doing advanced botulinum toxin, facial fillers, micro needling and vampire facial treatments in her practice.

Sheryl has attended a number of Dr Mark Bowes courses on minimally invasive dentistry and digital smile design over the years. He really sparked a passion in her for doing her rehabilitative treatments more carefully and precisely. She has spent the last 5 years using the DSD principals in all of her treatment planning giving the best treatment options to her patients.

2019 has already seen Dr Sheryl busy with more advanced facial aesthetics and she is now an accredited Aptos and Princess thread lifting practitioner. She is looking forward to becoming part of the Enamel team and giving the best minimally invasive aesthetic dental and facial treatments in a caring environment.

Dr Sheryl is currently a member of SADA and the HPCSA.

Dr Sonja Britz

Dr Sonja Britz qualified as a dentist from the University of Pretoria in 2005 and completed her community service the following year. In 2007, she started working in a private group practice in Pretoria. Endodontics and oral surgery are two subjects in dentistry that really appeal to her which she has focused on throughout her career thus far. Assisting in theatre on a weekly basis since working in private practice encouraged her to complete a postgraduate diploma in oral surgery in 2012, during that time also doing session work at the University. In 2015 and 2016 she completed a 14-month basic implantology and soft tissue augmentation course, relocated to Cape Town, and became a member of the international team for implantology. She drives herself to save a tooth above replacing it with an alternative, which prompted her to recently complete her diploma in endodontics through the University of Pretoria.

In her spare time, Dr Britz enjoys doing endurance running. Her approach to doing a root canal treatment is inspired by how she approaches these runs. According to her, “How you start will determine how you finish. Slow and steady will eventually help you to achieve the goal”.

She loves the challenge and effort it takes to succeed. Continuous education is very important to her, including being part of a dental family where she can share knowledge, advice, and learn from those that have more experience than her. She enjoys her work and loves what she does and hopes her passion is visible to those she helps.

Willie has a particular interest in utilising partial extraction therapy to minimise postoperative resorption of the alveolar bone. He was probably the first clinician in South Africa to utilise socket shield implant treatment. Willie is also passionate about saving teeth, using minimally invasive periodontal treatment.

Willie feels that life is about growing and improving yourself. This philosophy and the opportunity to work with and share knowledge with world-class clinicians have been the driving force behind him going into partnership with the Enamel Group.
