I recently had the pleasure of having major work done my teeth with Dr Sheryl Smithies. It should be noted that, before the treatments, of which there were several, I had a chronic fear of dentists. When I say “fear”, I mean I’d rather … More have my fingernails pulled out and then be hung, drawn and quartered than sit in a dentist chair. However, my wife “persuaded” me to go, in order to get my teeth fixed. My wife can be very persuasive.So, on a sunny Tuesday morning I found myself sitting in Dr Sheryl’s chair. She was very friendly and smiled, assuring me that everything was going to be fine.“For whom?”, I wondered.I open my mouth and she began her assessment of the scope of works. Dentists like to speak to their assistants in code: “m25, B17, c12 blah, blah blah” etc. This is perfectly normal and you shouldn’t let that worry you. It’s designed to communicate the depth of the disaster without the patient panicking. And it worked well for me because I find that, the more ignorant I am, the happier I am.Dr Sheryl and her assistant then began to tackle the challenge set before them. Typically, dentists like to wait until you have three fingers, a drill, two suction hoses and a rubber dam crammed into your face, before they ask questions like:“are you comfortable?” or “what are the names of your children?”Mercifully, Dr Sheryl doesn’t do this. Being a professional, she already knows that I don’t have anything, even vaguely interesting to say. Instead, she tells you just enough, so you think know what’s going on and you feel comfortable, without scaring the life out of you with all the gory details.All said and done, the scope of work was extensive, incorporating a root canal, at least 9 fillings and cosmetic work on four of the front teeth. Dr Sheryl proceeded confidently and gently, to go about fixing all the problems. (there are pictures available of the before and after)The total time in the chair was several hours but it seemed to fly past very quickly and remarkably comfortably. I visited Dr. Bowes in relation to getting the final crowns completed for an implant I had got for my front tooth, as well as a crown needed over my adjacent front tooth. … More There were no shortcuts and everything was done properly, including a root canal bleaching that I had needed for my dead front tooth that had become discoloured (to ensure that there was no dark lines showing underneath my new crown), and also ensuring that my gum lines were correct and symmetrical before the final crowns went in. On my 2nd to last visit, the crowns that had been ordered did not match the colour of my teeth perfectly. Dr. Bowes had these re-done and fitted the following week. I wanted my teeth to look natural and to avoid the obviously fake, brilliant white veneers that you sometimes see on people. Happy to say that my new teeth look very natural, and are much stronger than my previous bridge. I would recommend Dr. Bowes to anyone looking to improve their smile and I felt in safe hands with him at all times.

For many years my wife has searched for a competent dentist to carry out repair/maintenance work on her teeth which were initially structured through the process of “Direct Resin Composite Veneers” 22 years ago. Dental opinions varied … More from “not possible” to “you need specialised very expensive rework to restore your teeth”. For a long time my wife was unable to smile spontaneously and in the process suffered loss of self-esteem and impairment of confidence. Half smiles were all she was capable of which projected an image opposite to her outgoing bubbly personality. To be able to see her smile again with confidence was my greatest desire. After numerous unsuccessful consultations with dental practitioners, she, out of sheer desperation left a short comment on a SA Dental site and was promptly telephonically contacted by Dr George Botha, who was immediately sympathetic to her plight. He assured her that what she had experienced in the past was by no means totally true; there were affordable corrective measures to restore not only the health of her gums, rework of her teeth but most importantly, restore her fading self-confidence. I am extremely indebted to Dr Botha for his exceptional ethical dentistry approach and carrying out all the necessary dental procedures and restoration of her teeth to give effect to a gracious and open smile. I can now once again watch with pride my wife smile infectiously and with great confidence.
