Dental Aesthetics and Facial Ageing

Ageing is a natural process, characterised by a series of changes in the appearance and function of the body.  Being visual creatures, we notice changes in the facial area first. Facial ageing is caused by a variety of factors, further compounded by genetics and the environment.

Types of facial ageing include ageing of the skin, volume, muscle and bone. The skin, soft tissues (fat and muscle), and structural support (bones and teeth), are all affected, gradually changing the shape of your face as you age.

It’s inevitable, but if we can slow the effects, why not?

No single treatment is able to alleviate all the effects of ageing, so it’s important to consider all the available options, and your objectives, before going ahead with any treatment.

One treatment that is fast gaining popularity is anti-ageing dentistry.

Ageing affects your smile

Your smile will go through many changes as you age. Gums recede, your teeth discolour and you produce less saliva, which further contributes to dental problems. You also lose teeth, or they shift and wear down. Your teeth are the foundation for your face. When that foundation loses strength, it affects the rest of your face. For example, lips sagging, fine lines appearing, and a “sunk-in” look.

How Enamel Clinic can help

Improving the appearance of your smile is about more than just having whiter teeth. By repairing damaged teeth, we can restore the look and function of your smile by eliminating any pain or discomfort you may be experiencing while eating or drinking.

Once any issues are corrected, we can begin to enhance your natural smile with cosmetic dentistry treatments.

Digital Smile Design

Enamel Clinic was the 1st practice in South Africa to use this concept and is South Africa’s only official Digital Smile Design (DSD) clinic.

According to Dr Mark Bowes, “DSD is the starting point of all dental rehabilitation, for both simple and complex cases. It gives us a Facially Driven Planning process which can guarantee perfect results”.

DSD is an approach to dentistry that enables us to create custom-designed smiles that enhance your natural features.

We use technology to digitally build your ideal smile. We can then discuss the best treatment options to make your perfectly youthful smile a reality:

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are custom-made shells cut and shaped to perfectly cover the front surface of your teeth. Veneers can be used to correct broken, discoloured and malaligned teeth. At our practice, we do minimally invasive veneers so as not to harm your teeth in the process. This gives you a whole new smile without compromising on the condition and function of your natural teeth.

Aesthetic Bonding

This is a cosmetic dental procedure where a composite resin is applied to one or more teeth that have become discoloured or physically damaged. It uses dental composite (colour-matched to your teeth) to reshape and restore the teeth. Composite can be shaped and molded to fill in gaps, build up worn and uneven surfaces and repair chips to produce a beautiful, natural looking aesthetic.

Tooth Whitening

As the name states, this is the process of whitening discoloured teeth. Whitening your teeth is the most common cosmetic dentistry procedure. It’s a quick and painless solution to whiten teeth in the fastest, easiest, and most cost-effective way.

Internal Bleaching

In cases of trauma or decay, the discoloration begins from inside the tooth and spreads outwards. Traditional tooth whitening won’t remedy this, since the discolouration is caused by the pulp on the inside of the tooth dying.

In these cases, internal bleaching is used to restore the colour of the tooth. It involves placing peroxide crystals inside of your tooth. In order to perform this type of whitening, a root canal must have been completed prior to starting treatment.

Aligners

With age, teeth shift. Aligners are invisible removable cosmetic appliances designed to remedy tooth movement. Aligner technology can straighten teeth that are crowded, rotated and tilted forward or backward.

Dental Implants

A dental implant closely rivals a healthy, natural tooth. Dental implants are metal posts or frames that are surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath your gums. Once in place, they allow your dentist to mount replacement teeth onto them.

At Enamel Clinic, we provide world-class implantology treatments to ensure your implant fits, feels, looks, and functions like a natural tooth. These procedures also help stop or prevent jaw bone loss.

Smile Yourself Younger

Anti-ageing dentistry treatments are a quick, highly effective way to enhance your smile. They provide an inexpensive, minimally invasive and long-lasting means to look and feel instantly younger.
